Primers for silicone rubber act as adhesion promoters, facilitating the bonding of silicone to other non silicone materials such as metals, glass, and thermoplastics. These adhesion promoters are solvent-based and consist of a blend of reactive silanes and siloxanes. Silicone rubber applied to the primed surface and subsequently undergoes vulcanization, which creates a strong bond between the silicone rubber and the underlying material.
To apply the primer, clean the surface with alcohol to remove any dirt and debris. Then, using a brush, apply the primer onto the substrate, e.g., glass. After applying the primer to the substrate, place the silicone rubber on the substrate and vulcanize it to bond the silicone rubber to the substrate. Vulcanization is the process of treating crude or synthetic rubber to give it useful properties like elasticity, strength, and stability.
